    Hello MOC Members,

The AOM workshop described below, previously described as "registration requested," was inadvertently left out of the AOM-Philly registration system.  Therefore, registration is no longer "requested" (or even possible, really).  That said, the methods discussed are particularly useful for analyzing cognition-related data and we would enjoy having a strong MOC presence in the workshop.  If you have appropriate data (e.g. people or other entities in the rows and profile data in the columns) that you would like analyzed as an example please bring it along.  More information below. Thx-Chris

Comparative Visualization Techniques - MDS & GLA Data Visualization

    Scheduled: Sunday, Aug 5 2007 10:00AM - 12:00PM at Philadelphia Marriott in Room 309

This Workshop is designed as a hands-on introduction to two approaches to visualizing complex data. Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) is a tool commonly used for visualizing proximity data such as demographic similarities, judgments of perceived similarities, co-occurrences, cross-elasticities, spatial distances and so on. Graph Layout Algorithms underlie most of the tools used for visualizing sociometric or social network data, such as which companies have board interlocks with each other or who gives advice to whom within a company. Although each of these tools has been extensively used within these specific niches, each can also be used to effectively analyze different kinds of data. In this workshop, we will give a brief introduction to and review of both visualization techniques and then compare how they can both be used on the same dataset. All participants are invited to bring their own dataset as well, as time will be devoted to helping individuals analyze their own data during the hands-on portion of the workshop. All participants will be provided with evaluation software necessary to participate in the workshop free of charge. We expect participants to bring their laptops to the workshop in order to participate in the hands-on portion of the workshop. Laptops must be able to run Windows-based software applications to participate in the workshop.

Laptop required for participation and pre-registration is not required.  However, please contact presenter for details.
