The purpose of this workshop is to explore theoretical connections between organizational identity and memory, especially as expressed and experienced in organizations through actual or virtual corporate museums/sites, as well as through stories, artifacts, and symbols. It will draw from theory and research, but also from practice in how organizations engage and express identity and memory in their museums, visitor centers, and corporate history displays. The workshop is designed to create opportunities for dynamic conversation among scholars and practitioners within the broad theoretical framework of the relationship between organizational identity and memory. In addition to the important goal of generating future research questions about the relationships between organizational identity and memory, the following are intended outcomes: to increase understanding of how organizations express their identities through symbols, stories and other artifacts and the meanings that are attached to these actions; to better envision how organizational memory impacts organizational decision making, change, and employee identification; and, to enhance awareness and understanding of memory-identity connections for scholars who study organizations and the organizations themselves, with their ever increasing need to effectively express who they are and what they do in a complex, competitive global marketplace.
Preregistration is preferred but not required. The first two hours will take place onsite. In the remaining time, participants will have the opportunity to tour one or more of these sites: Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame, or the Lululemon flagship store.
