Announcing the Qualitative Methods Workshop at UC Davis Graduate School of Management
July 16-19, 2012
Instructors: Beth Bechky, Kim Elsbach, Andy Hargadon
This July we will be holding our qualitative training workshop, open to faculty and doctoral students. This three-day workshop will provide intensive training in basic methods of qualitative data collection, analysis, and presentation. The course will consist of a short field-based project to provide hands-on experience in:
1. Observation and interviewing
2. Creating field notes and drafting memos
3. Grounded theoretical analysis and developing categories from the data
4. Framing and presenting qualitative research in order to make theoretical contributions to the literature
Our goal is not only to provide training in qualitative methods, but to work together to develop a community of colleagues to support participants as they go on to do their own qualitative research projects.
Last year was our first year of the Methods Workshop, and we had an overwhelmingly positive response. Some quotes from last year's attendees:
"It was an incredible learning process. . . We left with many different ways to analyze data ."
"It was a pleasure to learn from you and your years of experience. I just leave wanting more of that."
" It was excellent. I wish I could have done it sooner."
UC Davis is located in northern California, about 45 miles from Napa and 75 miles from San Francisco. Ranked #1 by the Financial Times in 2006, the Organizations group at UC Davis is renowned for its concentration of qualitative scholars. For the last decade, we have held the annual Davis Conference on Qualitative Research on campus.
The basic cost will be $1500, with a discounted rate of $900 for doctoral students. Attendees are expected to pay for their own travel and lodging costs (the closest airport is Sacramento International). Applications are due May 30, 2012.
See our website for more detailed information about the schedule and logistics for the workshop, and to apply: http://qualitativemethodsworkshop.ucdavis.edu/methods.php
Please pass this announcement along to any colleagues or students you believe would be interested in attending.
Sincerely, Kim, Beth, and Andy
