    Publishing Qualitative Research
    Master Class and Writing Workshop
    June 4th 2012, HEC Montreal

A full-day event sponsored by the Journal of Management Studies, HEC
Montreal (Strategy as Practice Study Group) and the Canada Research Chair in
    Strategic Management in Pluralistic Settings

Publishing qualitative studies in high-profile, high-impact academic
journals is not easy. Despite the efforts of qualitative methodologists,
conventions about what constitutes appropriate ways to collect, analyze and
present qualitative data are considerably less codified than is the case for
quantitative data (Pratt, 2008). While editors and reviewers of the field’s
premier journals share high expectations for the rigor of qualitative
studies, these expectations are not always convergent and the way to address
them is not always clear. In the absence of precise criteria and indicators,
publishing qualitative research inevitably takes the shape of a craft that
authors (as well as editors and reviewers alike) frequently (and quite often
    painfully) learn by doing.

In order to help qualitative researchers improve their understanding of the
expectations of editorial teams for these journals, HEC Montreal’s Strategy
as Practice Study Group (GéPS) will host a one-day event that will give a
select group of participants the opportunity to interact with the editors of
five major journals in management: the Academy of Management Journal, the
Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Organization Studies
    and Strategic Organization.

The event will take place at HEC Montreal, on June 4th 2012, and will
combine editors’ presentations, a master class on publishing (featuring
examples of papers that have been through the editorial process, with both
the author and the editor present), and a paper development workshop in
which selected participants will receive in-depth feedback on their work
from invited editors and fellow workshop participants. Meals will be
provided. Dinner and cocktails on the evening of June 3rd will be
sponsored by the Journal of Management Studies and the Society for the
    Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS).

    Invited guests are:

Kevin Corley, Arizona State University, Associate Editor, Academy of
    Management Journal

Samer Faraj, McGill University, Senior Editor, Organization Science
Ann Langley, HEC Montreal, Co-editor, Strategic Organization and Senior
    Editor, Organization Studies

Davide Ravasi, Università Bocconi Milano, Associate Editor, Journal of
    Management Studies

Prospective participants are asked to submit a paper proposal, extended
abstract (about 2500 words) or full paper by March 5th, 2012. Decisions will
be communicated by March 16th, 2012. Admitted participants are expected to
deliver a full version of their paper by May 12th.

Do not miss this unique opportunity to meet editors of premier journals and
get valuable feedback on your work! Although plenary sessions will be open
to all, to ensure that participants get quality feedback, the publications
workshop will be limited to 12 participants.

Please send your submissions and/or questions to Charlotte Cloutier,
Department of Management, HEC Montreal at charlotte.cloutier@hec.ca.
