    Professional Development Workshop:

Contributions of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS) to Knowledge and Action

    Saturday, August 12th – 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

    <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place> Marriott Marquis, International 9 - International Level

This three-hour workshop will stimulate discussion about new findings, new contributions, and new explanatory mechanisms that are uncovered when conducting research using the perspective of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS).  A POS perspective focuses on dynamics in organizations that enhance human and institutional strength, produce resilience and restoration, foster vitality, and cultivate spectacular individual and organizational outcomes (e.g., Cameron, Dutton, & Quinn, 2003).  In the 2004 Academy Meetings, a similar PDW dedicated to POS was the highest attended at the meeting and, since that time, POS continues to attract a great deal of attention among organizational scholars.  For example, at least a half-dozen edited books are under contract by various authors on POS.

A POS research perspective is not limited to a particular theory or framework, or a singular level of analysis, but draws from the full spectrum of organizational theories and methods to understand, explain, and predict the occurrence, causes, and consequences of extraordinary individual, unit, and organizational performance.  Researchers using a POS lens have drawn from identity theory, institutional theory, network theory, coordination theory, organization design theory, self-determination theories, theories of empowerment and change, organizational culture, leadership, and emotions, and others.  Examining the highest potential and the best of the human condition across multiple domains are targets of research focus.

The specific objectives of the proposed workshop include:

    ·         To share knowledge about the POS perspective

    ·         To examine what new findings, contributions, and methods are emerging in POS-related research

    ·         To examine how participants own research can be informed by a POS perspective

    ·         To facilitate building a community of scholars interested in POS
