    OVERVIEW

Social evaluations are highly consequential for organizations and are thus of central interest to management scholars in a variety of traditions. In examining social evaluations primarily as intangible assets and liabilities, most scholars have adopted an organizational perspective. As a result, extant research speaks surprisingly little to characteristics and processes specific to those doing the evaluating: audiences. In this symposium, we redress this shortcoming, conceptualizing audiences as playing a more central role in social evaluations of organizations. Developing a view of social evaluations as the product of social construction processes that implicate multiple, heterogeneous evaluators, we will focus centrally on audiences, addressing potential distinctions among them, the organizational attributes they pay attention to, and the manners in which they interact with each other to form both positive and negative assessments of those attributes. We intend for this symposium to encourage scholarly exchange across theoretical and methodological traditions and, by attending to audiences, add energy and insight to the burgeoning work on social evaluations of organizations.

    FORMAT

Panelists will discuss their work on the role of audiences in social evaluations. We will then have a short panel discussion followed by Q&A with the audience.
