Symposium Invitation | AOM 2025
Title: Emotions, Temporality, and Strategic Renewal
Session Type: Presenter Symposium
Date/Time: Monday, July 28, 2025, 13:45 - 15:15 CEST
Location: Bella Center: MR180
Divisions: OMT, STR, MOC
Join us for a transdisciplinary symposium that advances an understanding of strategic renewal by foregrounding the powerful-but often overlooked-roles of emotion and time in processes of strategic renewal. While the field has long privileged rationalist and resource-based views, our six presenters shed light on how nostalgia, trauma, and temporal framing influence strategic renewal, drawing on diverse empirical contexts in Finland, Canada, and the USA.
Organizer: Akshaya K. Varghese, PhD Candidate, University of Michigan
Discussant: Charlene Zietsma, Professor, University of Michigan
Presentations:
- Tina Dacin (Queen's University) – Custodianship of Place: How Custodians Engage in Strategic Renewal through Emotions and Trans-temporal Work
- Ryan Raffaelli (Harvard University) – Cognitive and Emotional Framing during Industry and Organizational Reinvention
- Timo Vuori (Aalto University) – Nostophobia: The Impact of the Past and Present on Post-Merger Integration
- Innan Sasaki (University of Warwick) – Finnish Karelians: Intergenerational Transfer of Traumatic Memories and Emotions
- Trevor Israelsen (Penn State University) – Entrepreneurial Visions as Rhetorical History
- Akshaya Varghese (University of Michigan) – From Motor City to Mobility City: The Double-Edged Sword of Managerial Nostalgia
We invite scholars of strategy, organizational theory, and managerial cognition and emotion to join this discussion on the emotional and temporal forces that shape strategic renewal.
