Post-Doctoral Position in Work and Organization Studies

We are pleased to announce plans to award up to two two-year postdoctoral fellowships in the Work and Organizations Studies (WOS) group at MIT Sloan. Ideal candidates will have recently completed a PhD—or be near completion—with a research agenda relevant to management. Degrees may be in psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, organizational theory, or related social science and management fields.

The fellowships provide an opportunity to continue research within the WOS intellectual community. WOS faculty employ a range of approaches, including quantitative and computational methods, ethnography, and field- and lab-based research. Interdisciplinary exchange is central to our work, and our collaborations frequently extend to partners in corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors.

Each fellow is paired with at least one faculty mentor. While collaboration is not required, it is strongly encouraged and readily available. Fellows who engage deeply with the community tend to benefit most. Preference will be given to applicants who can articulate how they would leverage WOS’s intellectual environment.

In addition to research, fellows are expected to participate in workshops and seminars and to mentor our Predoctoral Associates. Fellows will also teach one section of an undergraduate course at the intersection of organizations and communication. The course develops students’ understanding of organizational dynamics and their ability to navigate social networks, work in teams, interpret incentives, leverage collective intelligence, manage change, and make sound decisions. Laboratory sessions, led by TAs and writing faculty, provide structured practice in written, oral, and visual communication.

These fellowships are intended to broaden access to research careers. We therefore encourage applications from individuals with unconventional research trajectories. “Unconventional” includes scholars transitioning from outside the traditional business school context or those whose backgrounds differ from conventional academic pathways.

We recognize that such trajectories often involve overcoming meaningful obstacles. In 250 words or less, please describe a specific obstacle you faced, including what you hoped to achieve, what stood in your way, how you addressed it, and what you learned. This statement may be included in your cover letter or submitted as a supplemental document.
